The Icelandic Alphabet
Listen to the Icelandic alphabet being spoken by a native Icelander.
There are 31 letters in the Icelandic alphabet. The letters c, q, w and z are not native to the alphabet. However, foreign words, usually proper nouns, retain these letters, though there are exceptions to this rule. For example, the name Colin is spelled the same in Icelandic, whereas Venezuela is spelled Venesúela. In the future, I will provide a thorough explanation of why some words inherit their foreign spellings and some words do not.

I just found your site (somehow?!) and will enjoy playing around it when I have more time, thanks. Have you updated or added more since ‘06 (it’s now almost ‘09)? perhaps on another site? I hope to visit Iceland sometime in ‘09 for the very first time!
