<p>There are 31 letters in the Icelandic alphabet. The letters <em>c</em>, <em>q</em>, <em>w</em> and <em>z</em> are not native to the alphabet. However, foreign words, usually proper nouns, retain these letters, though there are exceptions to this rule. For example, the name <em>Colin</em> is spelled the same in Icelandic, whereas <em>Venezuela</em> is spelled <em>Venesúela</em>. In the future, I will provide a thorough explanation of why some words inherit their foreign spellings and some words do not.</p>
